Our MA Sport Journalism programme aims to develop and inspire a new generation of outstanding international sports journalists. Designed from the ground up, incorporating international best practice, this exciting programme is a first for the region.
You’ll be hands on from the day one, learning multimedia techniques and contributing to the programme’s own sports website and other media channels. Expect to be challenged academically and professionally.
The MA Sport Journalism programme is conducted in English, and we’re proud to be working in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, which has an outstanding reputation for sport education.
But the programme is more than just journalism. Students will take modules in sports marketing, management and more, equipping you with the skills to work in the mainstream media, sports PR, or as a freelance.

How long does it last?
The total duration of the programme is 1,5 years with total three semesters during education period.
Time spent at the academy will vary depending on the learning topic, but in the first year students can expect to working face-to-face with lecturers for around half a day, four days per week. As the programme progresses there will be more focus on self-study and work experience. Of course, as an MA programme, all students will be expected to complete assignments and develop their skills and understanding outside the scheduled teaching hours.
Will I learn to use professional equipment?
Yes, most certainly. The programme is based in the academy’s new Multimedia Centre, a separate building on the academy campus that combines television and radio studio facilities, with a flexible learning space designed to encourage collaboration and innovation.
We aim to make sure our graduates feel confident working in modern newsrooms and other media environments, able to handle cameras, microphones, studio lighting and production desks. You’ll learn to edit video and audio using both mobile apps and industry standard software. Mobile journalism is having an increasing impact and you can expect it to be at the heart of the programme.
What will I learn?
In semesters one, the focus is on developing core media skills including sport writing (in English), online journalism, mobile, social media, television and radio. This is multimedia programme for tomorrow’s media professionals.
Semester two is geared towards practical experience, applying the lessons of the first year, as well as additional adademic areas of study.
Semester three is devoted to the supervised creation of a multimedia project or written dissertation.
Being a Master’s programme, there is also an important academic component, giving the student a foundation in critical thinking and writing in an academic environment.

Online writing. How to write in English, in the style of native English-speaking journalists, to create sport news, match reports, features, interviews and comment.

Photojournalism. How to use a professional DSLR camera to cover sporting events and conferences, including use of lighting and lenses.

Mobile video. How to combine camera and video editing apps with advanced video techniques for creating a variety video forms, from documentary-style stories to social media-style videos.

Television. How to work on both sides of the camera, as an anchor, presenter and reporter, or as producer and studio manager. Areas such as lighting and mixing desk operation will be covered, as will video editing.

Radio. How to plan, record and edit compelling audio packages as a reporter. In the academy’s new Multimedia Centre radio studio, students will learn how to produce and present live radio programmes and discussions.

Sport marketing and management. In collaboration with other departments at the academy specialising in sport marketing and management, students will learn how the sport industry operates and broaden their skills, preparing them not just to work in the mainstream media, but in PR or with sporting organisations and events.

Leadership and entrepreneurial journalism. The days of journalists spending their whole career with a single employer are disappearing fast. Tomorrow’s journalist needs to be able to operate as a project manager, collaborator and leader, developing themselves as a brand. Your future starts here!
Can I study in UK?
We are proud to collaborate with some of the most dynamic sports universities in the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom's finest, including sport journalism. This collaboration is still taking shape, but at present we hope to be able to provide a subsidised opportunity for a few students each year to attend Sheffield Hallam during the second semester.
